BIG IN JAPAN
Yoshikimono has started 10 years ago as a cutting edge Japanese ‘’Kimonos’’ fashion brand created by the Japanese rock star Yoshiki. The brand has been chosen to display at the V&A Exhibition in London featuring in Europe’s first major Kimono Exhibition ‘’Kimono: Kyoto to Catwalk’’.
Yoshiki is a composer, classically-trained pianist, and rock drummer who is described by Billboard as a “musical innovator” and was named “one of the most influential composers in Japanese history. He had a vision of his own and a strong desire to present and deliver the ultimate symbol of Japan, the ‘’Kimono’’ to the whole world through innovative styling and assisted in the modern designs of the brand’s giving the garments gorgeous style with rock spirit.
“Kimono is as traditional as you can get in Japan, a country which most people consider to be conservative,” he added. “I would like to keep tradition, and at the same time I’d like to break the unwritten laws the industry has made, which keep them confined within their own boundaries.” said YOSHIKI, the eldest son of kimono creators, who chose his groundbreaking music career instead of taking up the family business.

The Victoria and Albert Museum, London (V&A) is the world’s leading museum of art, design and performance with collections unrivalled in their scope and diversity. The exhibition will challenge this conception introducing Yoshikimono garments as a dynamic and constantly evolving icon of fashion. The major highlights of the exhibition include created kimono by living national treasure Kunihiko Moriguchi, the dress designed for Bjork by Alexander McQueen and worn on the album cover Homogenic. It also includes Star Wars Costumes modelled on Kimono by John Mollo and Trisha Biggar.

Yoshikimono made international headlines last year for opening Rakuten Fashion Week S/S2020 with a dramatic stage presentation that showed the traditional Japanese garments possibilities in today’s fashion scene as Yoshikimono popularity has exploded in fashion circles, top fashion magazines and Yoshiki himself continues to be in demand as a fashion icon.
