FASHION STATEMENTS FOR A CAUSE
Natalie Portman, Spike Lee, Waad Al Kateab and more spoke their hearts out at the Oscars this year using their red carpet outfits.
Actress Natalie Portman expressing her political points by wearing a masterpiece black and gold Dior dress which had the names of overlooked female directors embroidered into the Cape. ‘’I wanted to recognize the women who were not recognized for their incredible work this year’’ she said in a red carpet interview. She also had pointed out couple of years ago before while presenting the award for best director by using a strong statement on stage to ‘’ all male nominees’’ where in fact the nominees where all males despite the promising pool of female talents and it went viral. Some of the female directors’ names on her cape included Greta Gerwig ‘’Little Women’’ director, Marielle Heller ‘’A beautiful day in the neighborhood’’ director and Lulu Wang ‘’The Farewell’’ director.

Waad Al Kateab, the Syrian director and documentarian for Sama movie, the film tracking Syrian lives and specifically hers during the war in Syria. The director also used art to send her message with a dress designed by Reem Masri that stood out with the giant embroidery of an Arabic poem that translates to ‘’we dared to dream and we will not regret dignity’’. She made a bold statement which led the Arab world to be proud of her and her achievements, even though she didn’t win the Oscar.

Since the Oscars announced honoring the late basketball star Kobe Bryant, it was the second year in a row for Spike Lee to wear a purple suit in tribute to a legend. In 2019 he wore the Purple suit in homage to the singer Prince and this year he also made a statement using his Red Carpet purple Gucci suit with the number ‘’24’’ on it referring to the late basketball player Kobe Bryant in respect and memory to his tragic death.

The British costume designer, Sandy Powell who has been nominated for her Best Costume Design fifteen times by the Academy Awards and the winner of three awards also used her designs for a cause this awards season. She wore a Calico suit which was bearing Hollywood stars signatures to be used in auction taking place after Awards season to help preserve the cottage owned by her late friend Derek Jarman.
